Mike Goedecke
Mike Goedecke
Website: http://belief.com (http://belief NULL.com target=)
Mike Goedecke completed his undergraduate degree at UC Irvine with an emphasis in sociology and fine art. He then went on to complete a MFA degree from USC’s Cinema and Television Program. While at USC, Mike directed several of his own films and served as cinematographer for many other graduate films. While completing his master’s degree, Mike began a summer internship at Voyager, where within one week, he was promoted to design and produced graphics for the Criterion Laser Discs Collection. It was with this first experience in motion graphics design that Mike realized the creative opportunity in this medium. "Rhythm," Mike’s MFA thesis, was the culmination of this vision earning him both national awards and festival recognition. Mike was awarded a grant from the Annenberg Foundation to pursue other digital filmmaking techniques. Mike started the company Belief in 1994 to produce his first experimental documentary film entitled “Convergence”. With low cost Macintosh computers as his digital platform, Goedecke began his freelance career in broadcast design. His client list included: NBC, The Discovery Channel, Chevron, Activision, and ABC. Mike began his live action career as a director/cinematographer on show opens such as David Blaine-Street Magic and When Cars Attack (where he also was a segment director). Goedecke was then contracted by NBC in 2000 to create graphic promos for The Tonight Show to launch Jay Leno taking the show over. Upper management noticed the creative work and Mike was asked to spearhead a special project design division at NBC. Mike was flattered with the offer, but chose to continue doing his own work through the growing Belief. In 1997, Mike recruited other talented individuals into the company which required the Belief studio to be moved to a larger loft space. The mission for the company was clear. Belief would become an inspirational space in the vein of a traditional artist’s studio where creatives with different talents, strengths, and visions are brought together with clients to collaborate on projects. This formula has proved successful for Belief, with Goedecke as the Creative Director, Belief has gone on to win many creative and design awards and accolades, including Promax platinum, gold and silver awards and an Emmy. In 1999, Goedecke desired a way to return to his artistic filmmaking roots and decided to start Belief EXP, a division of Belief focused on experimental creative content. Under Belief EXP Goedecke has produced and directed many short films and experimental art installations. Pieces have been shown all around the world at festivals and galleries including the Geffen Moca, Lincoln Center, and the Sara Meltzer Gallery. Goedecke's award winning short film Untitled:003-Embryo is now for sale worldwide on the iTunes music store. Another outgrowth of the Experimental Division of Belief was a series of inspirational films Mike wrote and directed known as Pollinate. In an effort to inspire future generations of creative professionals these presentations examine the mysteries of the creative process. These films offer deep and sometimes humorous insight into what it takes to be a creative person in the world today. The films were viewed millions of times on the Belief website and have revolutionized the way many have seen their profession. Mike has been asked to speak about creativity at conferences around the world with his unique view on the creative process. Goedecke continued to spearhead Belief's design division until 2007, when he decided to close the design division down and start a website with good friend, TV executive Stephen Chao. The resulting website WonderHowTo.com aggregates How-To videos from more than 4000 websites. Wonderhowto's amazing growth has pushed its traffic to 8 million unique a month, teaching the world how to do everything from fixing a faucet to training your cat to pee on a toilet. Part of the success of the site was generated by a huge viral campaign that was devised by Goedecke and producer Ford Austin. This campaign consisted of hundreds of videos launched across all the top video sharing sites. With WonderHowTo.com now running strong, Mike returned his focus to Belief in early 2010 to evolve the company once again. Belief under Goedecke's innovative lead, is now focusing on content creation to ride the next wave of residual based entertainment technologies. Some projects in development include 3 feature films, a series of iPhone & iPad apps, a weightless cinema immersive experience, an IMAX gym, and a new type of stock footage company that aims to create a request based marketplace for aspiring director/cinematographers. Mike is also continuing his Live Action Directing career being represented by the company Creative Monster. |
