Tales of the Maya Skies was conceived by Alexandra Hall, former Executive Director of Chabot Space & Science Center, during a visit to Chichén Itzá in 2004. It was the team at the ARTSLab at the University of New Mexico, led by fulldome artist Hue Walker who produced the stunning 2D animation of the mythical sequence in the show. In this full-day hands-on intensive Hue Walker and Jonathan Strawn will present materials and ideas used in the creation Tales of the Maya Skies. Their artistry in this fulldome production relied heavily on a hybrid use of Autodesk Maya and Adobe After Effects. This will be a unique opportunity to learn how to apply your skills as a Maya or After Effects artist to creations designed for multi-camera fulldome productions.

DETAILS:
Explore the world of fulldome animation. Topics include:

Morning
• fulldome basics: what is it and how does it work?
• production for fulldome
• basic understanding of techniques required to present content on a fulldome
• short demonstration of simple techniques including basic Maya and AE, including materials from Maya Skies
• hand draw a dome master and view it on the dome
• Q&A discussion time, including a presentation of some thoughts, ideas, discoveries and puzzles about the process

Afternoon
• using your existing skill sets in Maya or After Effects, what is required to adapt your current skills to be able to create something for the fulldome
• work session with individual support as participants create a few sample dome masters, and a short test movie for the dome
• showcase: what you've produced
